Bunny Tails – Take Two

I was organizing my craft room the other day when I re-discovered a tote chock full of the pom-pom or bunny tail yarn. It’s basically been calling my name ever since, so I decided to finally put it to use and make another blanket.

Years ago, literally, I found an awesome pattern for making a baby blanket on the diagonal – which looks super cute with the pom poms – but I couldn’t find it anywhere! I thought I had downloaded it to my computer, then realized that was my computer with the exploded battery so it was all but lost on the interwebs. Then I remembered that I linked to it on my blog, so searched for that post and voila’, back in business. Was kind of cool finding my blog on Google search results too. First page, might I add. Probably why that’s one of my most popular blog posts, ever.

I am pretty sure that blanket was my first attempt at knitting anything other than a scarf and I almost quit a dozen times. I clearly remember it taking forever and being very frustrated, the movements and circular needles felt foreign, having learned to crochet first. I actually didn’t pick up knitting needles for another four years after finishing the blanket (and now I love both knitting and crocheting, but that’s a post for another day).

That blanket was my favorite to use for so long! The poms made it super thick and warm, perfect for our Winter spent in Washington. And it made an amazing pack and play “padded sheet” for a while there when he was transitioning to napping on his own – something that didn’t last for long! And best of all, it held up to machine washing and drying, although any I keep for myself in the future will be air dried, for sure.

So here’s what I have so far on the new one. I am one and a half skeins into a six skein blanket, which is more than the pattern calls for, but I wanted a very generous sized blanket. It’s super easy, really. Casting on the first stitch was the most difficult part, and I definitely encourage you to use Youtube to see how others have done it if you don’t have much knitting experience.

Anyway, back to knitting now. This blanket will make it into my Etsy shop in the next couple of days, but for now, the kiddo is feeling unwell with a fever for the second day in a row and this momma’s got a cup of coffee calling her name. Last night’s insomnia-induced 1am bedtime is not treating me very well today. Thank you, hormones and anxiety and life, thank you very much.

Love,

Michelle

I’m back! Kinda.

Hi!

I’ve been gone for much longer than I intended.. but for a very good reason! Decided to re-open my craft shop, CrochetBabyHats on Etsy. Need to think of a new name, because I’ve expanded my inventory beyond baby hats. I am not also making crocheted headbands for mom and baby, crocheted hats for moms (and dads) as well as my newest creation, knotted nursing necklaces!

CollageNecklaceI am loving the ability to be creative every day!

And I’ve decided to do a give away just for my blog readers! I’m just starting up again.. so all orders placed now through 9/7 will be entered into a drawing for a $15 credit to my shop. Just leave a comment mentioning this blog post at check out.

I have so many other things to update on.. including Elliott’s tongue tie surgery, which went well! …but those will be saved for a day I’m not up to my elbows in fabric scraps and yarn.

Pen Shop

This weekend I will have the chance to work on something creative! It feels like forever since I’ve been able to have enough time to dedicate to a project. I can’t remember the last time I crocheted something. I last used my serger to make baby wipes, last year. And the last time I used my sewing machine since before the bumble butt was born, it was to sew uniform patches on. Super exciting stuff.

My dad has a pen making shop in the backyard, a hobby he picked up while spending time in Japan during his last deployment in the Navy. His pens are aboard the USS America, the John C Stennis (and not only in the hands of my sailor) and they are at the Pentagon. Yes, that Pentagon.

If you would like to check out his Etsy shop, Write4YourLife, I set up for him, these pens make fabulous gifts and are completely customizable.

The bullet style clicky pen he made for me.

They look really good, huh? This one is acrylic but he also makes them in many other materials: a variety of woods, including dual and tri-tones, water buffalo horn and the center of a corn of cob.

Feeling Crafty

Can you see my boppy slipcover, crochet baby blanket and at least two baby hats here? No?.. Well then, I better get to work! Haha. Just when I think I am finally caught up with craft projects, I go to Joanns and Michaels and stock up on more supplies.

I can’t wait to make our baby boy a super fuzzy and warm baby blanket with the “bunny tail”  yarn on the far right. I had gone to Michaels to look for some silk flowers to put in a vase in our bedroom, but instead walked out with six balls of yarn! My stash is slowly growing out of a second storage basket. I may have a problem. :)

I looked on Etsy for pattern ideas for that fluffy yarn and found one made on a diagonal that looked 10x more awesome than any of the other ones I saw.. What I don’t understand is how they can afford to be so cheap! I bought enough for a standard sized baby blanket and it was close to $35 just for the yarn, and I see people selling the completed blankets for less than $30.. They must buy in bulk. I almost thought of messaging a few sellers and asking! And I may still do that. I’m sure there’s not that large of a market for them, I’m just curious as to how they do it.

Another random Etsy note is that I mailed one of my reindeer hats to Spain today! SPAIN! Wasn’t my first international shipment, but the first was to Canada, which doesn’t really count because there’s just a border between us and them! I was really interested to see how much it would cost using the same ‘ol padded envelope I use for all my shipments and it was $7.68. Interesting.

I think that’s enough random-ness for one post! Will mention that I am 27 weeks pregnant today and just booked my 3D/4D ultrasound for Oct 9th!! Three weeks and a day until I see our baby boy’s cute little face! :)

Busy Needles

I’ve been quite busy lately! Opened up an etsy shop to sell my crocheted creations. Tomorrow I’ll be busy making a pink and grey version of this owl.

And after that I’ll be putting together an adorable newborn photo shoot set like this one I made today, only in light blue. I have to say, I’m loving the ability to be creative! Everything I’ve made so far, has been a special request so that makes it even more fun. If you’d like to check out my shop, please feel free to request a design! http://www.etsy.com/shop/CrochetBabyHats

For anyone wondering, I am enjoying the last few weeks I’ll be able to spend with the sailor this year. It’ll be our last few memories of life together before parenthood begins!
